Applying for doctoral studies

Admission interview
After the application, the doctoral school organizes an oral admission interview, usually online. During the interview, the doctoral school’s admissions committee forms an impression of the applicant’s previous professional activities, motivation, plans, and commitment.
Decision on admission
Based on the submitted documents and the admission interview, the committee evaluates the applicant on a 100-point scale according to the following criteria:
- previous academic performance (MSc/MA/university degree classification) – maximum 30 points (excellent degree 30, good degree 20, average 10 points);
- English language proficiency – maximum 15 points (advanced 15 points, intermediate 11 points, basic 7 points for a comprehensive language exam, only for a written or oral language exam, 50% of the difference in points specified for each level of the comprehensive language exam; if no language exam is available, 0-7 points can be obtained based on an on-site oral assessment);
- results achieved in previous research, creative and/or professional work (academic student awards, scientific publications, patents, developments verified by documents) – maximum 30 points.
- ideas related to doctoral work, feasibility of the research program – maximum 25 points.
A minimum of 60 points is required for admission to the doctoral program. 60 points are only the minimum requirement for admission, but do not guarantee admission or any scholarship.
The admission decision is made by the president of the EDHT, considering the recommendation of the Admissions Committee, and a decision is issued. Applicants will be notified of the decision by the president of the EDHT.
Admission documents
Applications can be submitted via the online platform specified in the admission announcement by uploading the following documents:
- the application form completed on the electronic platform specified in the call for applications (data content: application form for doctoral training )
- proof of payment of the admission fee (HUF 9,000 in 2025);
- a copy of your MSc/MA/university degree (along with the original);
- copies of documents certifying language proficiency (along with the originals);
- professional CV;
- list of publications;
- Documents certifying scientific activities prior to doctoral training (e.g., TDK, OTDK, training courses, studies abroad, participation in projects, etc.);
- letter of acceptance signed by the chosen institute or research center and supervisor;
- preliminary research plan (1-2 pages) with the approval signature of the prospective supervisor(s); in the case of applicants applying for individual preparation, the applicant’s list of publications according to the Database (MTMT);*
- for applicants in employment, a statement of support from their employer ;
- other documents (e.g., recommendations);
- a statement indicating whether the applicant wishes to be admitted even if they do not receive a scholarship.
